Frequently asked questions
How is this different from the regime comparator?
The regime comparator tells you your total annual tax liability under each regime. This calculator takes that same annual figure and spreads it across the remaining months of the financial year — which is what your employer actually does every month under Section 192, and it changes depending on when in the year you joined.
What happens if I don't declare a regime to my employer?
Since FY 2023-24, the new regime is the default. If you don't submit a declaration, your employer deducts TDS assuming the new regime — even if you'd prefer the old one. You can still switch when filing your return, but your monthly take-home during the year follows whatever your employer assumed.
Why might my actual TDS differ from this estimate?
Employers often true up the calculation partway through the year — after a salary revision, a bonus payout, or once you submit Form 12BB with your actual investment proofs — which can shift how much is deducted in the remaining months. Rounding conventions also vary slightly by payroll system.
